What people ask about glass before they order, answered straight.
It comes down to the space and the budget. Where a hinged door has no room to swing, a sliding door fits. Over a tub or on a standard shower, semi-frameless costs less. For the most open look, frameless glass. Corner, neo-angle and steam showers take a full enclosure, built panel by panel.
The doors we install are tempered safety glass. Frameless panels are 3/8" or 1/2" thick and anchored with solid hardware, and semi-frameless doors use the same safety glass inside a slim frame. Tempered glass is made so that, if it ever breaks, it crumbles into small pieces rather than sharp shards.
Clear glass is the usual choice. Low-iron glass is clearer still, without the green tint at the edges, and rain-pattern, frosted or patterned glass gives more privacy. Each one can be cut to your opening; which you choose changes the look, and it can change the price of the door too.
A factory protective coating on the glass resists hard-water spots, so the door looks clean with far less scrubbing. Ask for it on a frameless door when you request a quote. Beyond that, a quick squeegee after each shower keeps minerals from drying on the glass.
